Here’s a quick overview of the process for printing a part on a cylindrical shaft. In this case, we’ll print a grip directly on a golf club shaft. The process is as follows:

  1. Design the desired grip features in CAD software (Fusion360 shown). Ensure the bore through the part matches the diameter of the shaft you will print on later.
  2. Export the STL and run it through the Diabase Processor (Rotary Printing tab) to “unwrap” it (this is not shown in the video because it was done in an earlier, command-line-based, version of the software
  3. Import the unwrapped STL into Simplify3D and slice it normally. Ensure that the Z-offset is 0 in S3D. Rotary operation is 100% compatible with multi-material printing, so use whatever material and color combinations you would like.
  4. When you save the sliced file, the Diabase Processor will open again. Here you will select the Rotary Printing option, and the Processor will “rewrap” the file and upload it to your H-Series Machine.
  5. To configure the physical machine, replace the print bed with the Dovetail bed. Then slide on and lock the rotary axis. Plug the cables from the rotary axis into the designated connectors on the control board inside the electronics cabinet.
  6. Clamp your workpiece in the collet by hand. For printing operations, hand-tight is just fine.
  7. Home the machine from the H-Series Controller (HSC). The machine will home to the top of the workpiece. 4th-axis mesh levelling is also available, for cases where the the workpiece is eccentric with respect to the A-axis, or it sags in the X-axis. The tailstock is helpful in this case to keep the workpiece concentric over its entire span.
  8. Start the print from HSC.
